Gemdance, Dance, Dance, Dance!!!

Review #95 – Free Video Game

Gemdance, Dance, Dance, Dance!!!

Gemdance is intelligent, simple and elegant. It really is what free games should aspire to be, at least mechanically speaking. Last week I talked about a game with a beautiful message and execution. Today, it's simple mechanics well implemented. So, let's begin.

In Gemdance you play as Galactea, a prisoner of Serpentarius, the king of the Zodiac. Tired of being just a clockwork dancer in his treasure trove, you escape, and learn that the Zodiac's power resides inside magical gems.

Gemdance is basically Arkanoid. You play as a paddle, and make Galatea bounce around the stage, breaking gems to get their power (points). But the beauty of the game comes from how much it does with such a simple premise.

Each of the twelve Zodiacs has it's own “tower”, a series of challenges tied together by specific rules, obstacles and themes. The towers share the “personalities” of the Zodiacs, and end in a creative (and difficult) boss battle with each of them.

I just can't praise enough how Gemdance uses it's simple rules and creative level names to create a wonderful and unique world, so you'll just have to play it.

Viriax, Achoo!

Review #87 – Free Video Game

Viriax, Achoo!

Today I'm really sick. So... Viriax! Viriax is a... shooter? I guess? You don't really shoot, but you move vertically and are shot at. Mmm... Ok, perhaps it's not from a “traditional” genre.

Let's try again. In Viriax, you play a a virus. You travel through the body, infecting different organs. To access new ones, you have to earn enough points during your previous runs. So yeah, as I said, it's not easy to classify.

The game has a lot of different power-ups and enemies, and the randomly generated levels keep it fresh for a long time. What else could we expect from our good friend Locomalito?

C*ndy Crash, It Made me Rage Quit More than Once

Review #85 – Free Video Game

C*ndy Crash, It Made me Rage Quit More than Once

C*ndy Crash is a simple game with simple ambitions: Making our lives hell. Don't trust me? Give it a try and tell me then.

It's a single screen platformer, and it will make you earn every single one of it's levels. What I mean to say is that it's a really difficult game, but difficult in that “This time I'll do it!” kind of way.

With a wide variety of enemies, really pleasant graphics and ingenious level design, you should check it out. Oh, and the way the little guy dives towards the candy is just hilarious.

Cowboy Killa, Bang Bang!

Review #75 – Free Video Game

Cowboy Killa, Bang Bang!

Cowboy Killa is a fun and fast game. You kill ninjas, and monsters, and aliens, and more, for no apparent reason. Not unlike Super Crate Box, you have a huge collection of weapons at your disposal.

So yeah, Cowboy Killa is a frenetic 2D platformer where you work towards a score high enough to unlock the next area. A great game to pick up, kick ass, and relax. GO get 'em, tiger!

Roguelight, Pun Intended

Review #66 – Free Video Game

Roguelight, Pun Intended

With dark caves and flaming arrows, Roguelight is a game about light. You play as an unnamed archer with no clear goal. So pretty rogue-like for now. Only, it's a platformer. And the cave is covered in shadows. You only light source are, as you may have guessed, your flaming arrows.

The game does have a little “die and repeat” upgrade system, in which you'll die because you just can survive anymore. But, having a random map, it's not a chore. It's a fresh map to explore every time!

The upgrades are pretty standard (more arrows, more HP, more coins, double jump, etc.), so no need to go into further detail. The darkness is the real star here, hiding dangers and sometimes forcing you to save arrows by taking a hit to the face. The fun of the game comes from rationalizing your resources (HP and arrows) and trying to figure out what the hell you are supposed to do down there.

Pumpkin Patch, Defend Halloween

Review #63 – Free Game

Pumpkin Patch, Defend Halloween

Back to Funny Halloween (in contrast with Horror Halloween), we have a fast paced shooter: Pumpkin Patch. In it, you play the role of an unnamed pumpkin, spitting seeds against a horde of ghosts and monsters trying to steal your fellow orange brothers and sisters.

You move with WASD or the arrow keys, and shot with the mouse. That's all, go crazy on them now. Well, let's be fair, there are also some power ups that improve your attack, and not only you get more pumpkins (and therefore, more “lives”) every 20000 points, but the more pumpkins you have at the end of the level, the more points you get.

Even though there are only a handful of different enemies, each an every one is actually a completely different challenge. Learning to identify the more important targets is an essential skill. Survive till Halloween and you win. Have fun!

They Took Our Candy, We took their lives.

They Took Our Candy.

We took their lives.

Hello everyone, here I am bringing you a new (not that new) side-scrolling shooter, made by Rachid1984. The Story is set in Halloween (what a coincidence!), but your scheduled trick-or-treating has been interrupted by an alien invasion! Only your group of hyperactive, sugar-addicted trick-or-treaters can stop them and get the candy back.

So, you have to prepare your team, which is formed by four members. Each character available has a special feature, plus their own stats, Health, Speed, Attack and Special. Anyway, the most fun stat, obviously, is the Special Stat. You have Specials that heal the group, specials that gives them extra damage, and a few more different effects. The Special your group has is composed of the Specials of every character you have selected.

They Took Our Candy is an arrow-wasd game, with the casual appearance of the space bar to throw your characters specials, your team moves as one and fires together. During the game you collect the stolen candy, and try to eliminate the bastards that took it, the Aliens. They come in waves, and in between them you can upgrade your stats, like candy drop, speed, attack, etc.

At first your team will probably be clumsy (mine was pathetic) but the more candy you eat the higher the sugar rush, the more badass you get. The game has no continue feature, so when you die, you have to start again. The good news are that the game has some fun features: the candy you collected goes towards unlocking new characters and bonus attributes, giving you more choices in the next round! Also, the game has a nice Survival mode! Unlocked when you win it, of course.

My conclusion is that They Took Our Candy is a nice, well made game, with cute pixel art (I mean, look at those tiny ninjas!). And super fun too, so go and give it a try ;D

Wind and Water, five elements, one heck of a puzzle

Review #61 – Free Video Game

Wind and Water, five elements, one heck of a puzzle

Wind and Water is a puzzle game, and a pretty original one at that. I'll explain the system a bit, but it's a lot better to see it on the screen and actually interact with it.

You'll move some pieces on the board, trying to connect at least four of them to make them dissapear and get your points. The movements are made in a clockwise or anti-clockwise fashion, and there are five different elements (with both a color AND a simbol) to combine. Think like Puzzle Bubble, but without the cannon.

Now, on the whole story department – what? I Haven't told you? Sorry. The game does feature a lot of RPG elements! It has a Story Mode, with a whole meta plot: You play as Amy, working on some errands (a.k.a: capturing the Elements, needed to make the whole game work), while the game designer duo of brothers build the game world around you.

It's a quirky and fun game, full of comedy, while being pretty darn difficult. So, don't let the cutesy sprites fool you, it's an actual puzzle challenge. Enjoy!

Super Crate Box, fast and demented fun!

Review #60 – Free Video Game

Super Crate Box, fast and demented fun!

Here we have a one of the most simple, yet addictive, games on the whole Warehouse. Super Crate Box is just an old-school endless arcade, with the added fun of modern day unlockables. Jump and shot, collecting boxes until you die. Don't act so surprised, I said it was simple.

The action is fast, and the graphics are awesome. As you beat your high score, you'll also get new character skins and new weapons. Each weapon is unique, and as you progress through the game, your armory will expand. This is both good and bad: you have new toys, but now there are more options inside the crates and you can't really guess which weapon will come out each time.

With different levels and game modes to unlock, it's a gem that will keep challenging you for a while. And even after getting everything, you will (I'd say “can”, but you “will”) keep playing for the highscore. So I wont distract you anymore, grab some quarters and go play this arcade!

Slayin, Arcade Monster Hunting Madness

Review #49 – Free Video Game

Slayin, Arcade Monster Hunting Madness

With this post, July of Adventure has officially begun! More information about the event will be available on this week’s Babble.

Opening our second theme month ever, I present Slayin. In this arcade title, you take control of a hero slaying hordes and hordes of monsters. But your character is so... let's say “inspired”, that he cannot stop!

You can change your hero's direction and make him jump, but that's all. The characters move constantly, and enemies also continue spawning until you kill enough to gain a level. Get coins, buy upgrades, and kill bosses.

You have three characters to unlock, and after you defeat the final boss, the game enters a non-stop wave after wave of baddies. Maybe that too has an end. I haven't seen it.

So, go ahead, hero, and get this kingdom rid of the horrible monster menace!

Jetpack Joyride, how to be badass and succeed.

Review #35 - Free Video Game (Guest Review #1)

Jetpack Joyride, how to be a badass and succeed.

When I downloaded Jetpack, a free-to-play game in the Playstation Network, I can assure you I didn’t knew where I was going to end.

What could a guy with a machine gun jetpack and a large lab corridor filled with scientist offer? I’ll tell you, endless fun!

Halfbirck Studios (the creators of the well known Fruit Ninja) created a new awesome game, not only because it’s free and very easy to play (you only use one key!), but because it’s practical, volatile and very customizable. It suits almost every taste.

You start with Barry breaking into a never ending Lab with a super badass Jetpack, flying around, collecting coins and buying new gear in The Stash, which allows him to get better and better each time. You can even get him to drive awesome vehicles, from a badass chopper to an enormous dragon.

The main objective of the game is to travel as far as possible, collect coins, and avoid hazards such as zappers, missiles and high-intensity laser beams.

There are two types of win conditions in Jetpack Joyride: one of them is completing the race, getting all the achievements; and the other one is completing the game, getting all the extra achievements.  But really, the game even gives you the possibility to never stop playing, and keep winning forever!

Talking about the achievements, they come in all shape and sizes. Some condition how you have to play, some ask you to do something a number of times, and some check how you die.

For example, “Bull’s eye” is an extra achievement that you can earn landing (after death) at 200 mts, accurately, no more no less!

One of the things I loved the most was the incredible vast collection of Power-ups, the endless customization, and the never ending objectives, which make the game suitable for almost everyone.

So, get the coolest jetpack you can find, and start the adventure around the lab!

0Space, Zero-Gravity Deathmatch!

Review #34 – Free Video Game

0Space, Zero-Gravity Deathmatch!

Join us next week for a special review. All thanks to Dazzling March!

Blasters, proton grenades and laser swords. 2 to 4 players trapped in a confined arena. Who will walk out?

The setup is pretty simple. 0Space is a free-for-all combat. Killing someone earns you a point, dying takes one from you (as you can die without being killed by another player, this is an important rule). If you are hit, you die. No lifebar, no shields, no nothing. There really isn’t much else to add, at least rules wise.

The signature feature of 0Space is the low gravity environment. You may use it to your advantage, or find yourself drifting off into space (and dying) if you are not careful. And of course, how to bounce grenades on the walls is another nifty skill to acquire while playing.

The game is really easy to learn, and each match is really quick (at least with the four/five rounds I usually use). The only thing that might prove problematic is that only two-players can share a keyboard, to play with more you need controllers.

And don’t get to mad if things don’t go your way. Each round, a player gets to choose all the stages that will be used, so you will get you vengeance sooner or later.

Forget-Me-Not, as if I could

Review #33 – Free Video Game

Forget-Me-Not, as if I could

Let's keep the arcade vibe going, shall we? After all, it's still Dazzling March!

Today's item comes from an unknown dimension. I may have set a precedent of playing things without fully grasping their rules, but this time it's not my fault. In Forget-me-not, you (and up to another player) run around a Pac-Man-like maze, trying to collect all the little flowers and securing the key to the exit. The problem is, there are so many different (and randomly chosen) enemies that I'm still finding new ones!

The difficulty here comes in two flavors:

The enemies interact with everything in a lot of weird ways. Some can destroy the level around you (making it possible to shot yourself in the back, thanks to warping screen borders), stealing your key, eating the flowers (making the level end faster, while making you earn less point), killing each other (fun, until they multiply and/or explode), and a lot more stuff.

Keeping track of everything is pretty hard without even taking into account that...

A direct confrontation with most enemies is impossible. Really. Even the most basic enemy will eat (quite literally, you'll see) at least half your life bar before dying.  And that's just the little ones.

You will find yourself having to employ interdimensional marksman tactics to kill them before they kill you.

Given that the enemies are randomly generated and that the difficulty is pretty high, it will keep fresh for a long, long time. Enjoy.

Lessons from the arcade

Babbling at the Counter #32 – Video Games

Lessons from the arcade

Arcade games had three very important things that I feel got lost along the way. Modern games like Endless Forms Most Beautiful are bringing this stuff back:

They where easy to learn:

Simple controls that don't change through the game.
I see the appeal in mastering a complicated set of combinations to get the best results and perform awesome maneuvers, but sometimes I just want to sit down and play a game without having to look for information online or having to practice the aforementioned combos before I'm ready to actually enjoy my game.

Arcades were simple because they needed you to get hooked up easily. Watching someone else play or the helpful hints displayed during the “insert coin” screen had to be enough to get you started.

Just because we can make extremely more complex games today, it doesn't mean we should ignore how nice it is to just start a game and be able to play it. No online study, no long tutorials. Just a game.

They exploited every Detail:

This is more of a wake up call to prospective game designers than anything else.
Some games change your character as you progress. So, new obstacles are avoided with new powers. That doesn't make the game actually hard, mind you. It just means the player has to learn a few more tricks, and the designers can use new basic traps instead of improving the old ones.

And that's my point. Take EFMB. As the best way to move around is using the teleporting platforms, most of the traps are built around them. Putting spikes on them, having a floor completely devoid of them, giving enemies the ability to use them too, etc.

If halfway through the game you got, say, the ability to push blocks, then gameplay changes completely. From that point on, you start finding easy block puzzles so you can get used to them, instead of finding new (and tougher) platform puzzles.

This kind of stuff makes the game longer, but not in a way I find nice. You shouldn't be saying “I died because I forgot how gliding works”. The character is your avatar, controlling it should be intuitive after only a few rounds.

They had replay value in mind:

This is the aspect of replay value I want to talk about today: Coffebreak Games.
You can sit down, play something between fifteen minutes or half an hour and then get back to other things. Here's more information about the coffebreak concept. Arcades have that.

But to be a good coffebreak game, it has to have both simple controls and be short enough to be beaten in less than an hour.

Closing Up:

I know there are a few negative aspects to this old games that we don't want to see anymore. Inflated difficulty to keep you hooked, and having to play until you memorized the level in order to survive it are not features I remember fondly. Those are not what I'm talking about.

I'm not talking about pure nostalgia, either. It's not about making old games, it's making games the old way. Why make a fifty-hour long game if it's chock full of filler? Why not use fewer different abilities in the same game and use them to make other games?

I know the answer, money. Big companies won't get much from this ideas. Good luck we don't work there, then. I guess our projects can actually do some things those big names can't.

- The Storeman

I realize this post has a lot in common with Locomalito's philosophy.
“Lessons from the arcade” was already written when I found that on his site, so I decided to keep mine and just link to him.

Endless Forms Most Beautiful, The Hunt for the Psychedelic Microscopic Imps

Review #32 – Free Video Game

Endless Forms Most Beautiful, The Hunt for the Psychedelic Microscopic Imps

Up to two players can take control of Moebius and Pucky in this mind bending arcade. Teleporting platforms are the only way to navigate the twisting passages on each screen, where the bold protagonists (and, of course, the players) must capture each and every imp to advance.

This is a very simple arcade-inspired game that only uses the directional arrows. True to its source material, the pace is frenetic and addictive, pushing you to gather power-ups and points without making you feed quarters into the machine.

The treasured imps have tons of different skins and at the beginning of each level you have a little description of the buggers. It's mostly for color, but a nice touch nevertheless.

Actually, the game changes both the imps' and stages' design every time, so even if the levels are not randomly generated, there's enough variance to keep things fresh.

Add to that: nostalgic arcade graphics, really fun music and unique mechanics. Now you have a must-play masterpiece. Would you like the download link?

NeonPlat Adventures, a Colorful Calendar Composition

Review #31 – Free Video Game

NeonPlat Adventures, a Colorful Calendar Composition

With this post, Dazzling March has officially begun! More information about the event will be available on this week’s Babble.

NeonPlat Adventures is a whimsical plataformer that makes more levels every day. The level selection menu is a calendar, and you can choose to play any day up until the current date. Every morning, a new one becomes unlocked and fully playable.

Each day includes four stages, with their own (semi-randomized) layout, enemies and name. The names are important because they give useful clues about what you will actually find in that level.

Also, different days have different characteristics. Levels from Monday to Friday make up an adventure, with increasing difficulty each day. Saturday Strolls have longer levels, while Sunday Shorts are... shorter than average.

The game is populated by a wide variety of enemies, and capturing them can give PlatDude both useful and not-so-useful abilities. You’ll still want to get all of them at least once, to complete the achievement card.

Side effects of staring at the pause screen include mild dementia and craving for pickles.

All in all, NeonPlat Adventures is an awesome game that keeps on giving. You can play a game a day at a coffebreak pace, or stack them up to run through a whole adventure during the weekend. The graphics and music are pleasant too, so that’s a plus.

Action Fist! He stole from you. No one steals from you.

Review #30 – Free Video Game

Action Fist! He stole from you. No one steals from you.

From the creator of Uberleben comes another great gem. Clearly inspired by old classics, Action Fist! is both familiar and new. You’ll find yourself comfortable with the controls in a snap, like in old arcades. It’s all gunfire and mayhem from this point on!

Action Fist! is a co-op, and I highly recommend playing it like that.

The power up system is also a fun feature. You have both straight power ups like multi shot or rapid fire, sure. Now, in a world color coded for your convenience, picking up a color for your gun helps you deal extra damage to enemies of the same color. As you can only have two different weapons and there are three colors, you can see why a partner to provide that extra color can save you.

On difficulty, there are a lot of options. I’m sure one will suit your needs.

Last note, but an important one. There’s a level with rain in the background. It caused a fair share of lag in my computer. Don’t worry though, it’s only one level. You should be able to play through it.

Give adventure a try! And if you are looking for a setting to play BADASS, look no further!

Party Games

Babbling at the Counter #25 – Video Games

Party Games

This overlooked category has a lot of room for development. What do I call a “party game”? Well, and example would be Uberleben, from last week. A simple short game, that can accommodate multiple players and with great replay value.

Let’s see each one of this points and why they are important:

Multiplayer: This one is obvious. In a party, there will be more than 2 players, so a game that can be played by more people at the same time is good.

Replay value: This ties to the “short” part of the definition. You won’t play this game once, but multiple times with multiple people. And it should be fun to play even after you have seen someone else do it.

Short: If the game can’t handle more than two people, you will want turns to rotate fast. And even if it does have room for three or more people, it’s best if each game round is short. So everyone gets a turn, mainly.

Simple: Up to this point, lots of games would qualify for a party game. What sets them apart is this very idea. Fighting games, for example, are multiplayer (two people), with short rounds and with replay value. But they are so complex that an experienced player can go around undefeated and that’s not fun. When designing a party game, keep an eye on this one.

This may be one of the most rambling babbles I have ever written. Some time I could try and organize it better. We will see.
