Gemdance, Dance, Dance, Dance!!!

Gemdance is intelligent, simple and elegant. It really is what free games should aspire to be, at least mechanically speaking. Last week I talked about a game with a beautiful message and execution. Today, it's simple mechanics well implemented. So, let's begin.

In Gemdance you play as Galactea, a prisoner of Serpentarius, the king of the Zodiac. Tired of being just a clockwork dancer in his treasure trove, you escape, and learn that the Zodiac's power resides inside magical gems.

Gemdance is basically Arkanoid. You play as a paddle, and make Galatea bounce around the stage, breaking gems to get their power (points). But the beauty of the game comes from how much it does with such a simple premise.

Each of the twelve Zodiacs has it's own “tower”, a series of challenges tied together by specific rules, obstacles and themes. The towers share the “personalities” of the Zodiacs, and end in a creative (and difficult) boss battle with each of them.

I just can't praise enough how Gemdance uses it's simple rules and creative level names to create a wonderful and unique world, so you'll just have to play it.

changeType(), Hack Your Way Out

It's hard to find a game with an idea you haven't seen before. Maybe it's been done, but I have yet to see something like changeType() again.

The game is a puzzle platformer built around a single mechanic: you can mix the properties of the objects on the screen. This works as follows: you take object A (the blocks that make up the floor) and an object B (like a row of spikes). Then every instance of those objects exchange their properties. So now, the floor kills you but the spikes don't.

Besides that, the game is a straight forward platformer, and that's good. The changing mechanic is so broad, and you have so many elements to combine, that it would be daunting if your character did more.

And the graphic design is the thing that ties everything together, mixing regular video game graphics with flashes and glitches when you use your powers. So, it looks nice, and it play awesome.

MonoDi, Three Games in One!

Well, not really. I mean, the thing about MonoDi is that, by changing just a few simple rules, it works towards giving each of it's three sections a distinctive identity. So basically, it's three games in one. Oh, and also, there is a “bonus level” or mini game in between sections. So, yay! More content!

Now, what is MonoDi? It's a shooter platformer with puzzle elements, brought to us by the creator of DuoTasking. Much like there, you have to figure out HOW to beat the level, and THEN perform the necessary shooting and platforming. Part of the charm (and difficulty) of the game is that, in each level, your gun will only fire in one direction.

So, good challenges, a nice difficulty curve, and innovative combat makes MonoDi a must play. Good luck!

Review # 72 – Free Video Game

Glum Buster, Let's Bust Some Glum!

Let's say this and then take on each part by itself: Glum Buster is an artistic shooter puzzle game. And it sometimes has platformer segments. Ok, now, part by part:

In Glum Buster, you take control of a silent protagonist in a dream-like world, fighting against creatures of darkness. I call it a “shooter” because you use the keyboard to move your character around, while using your mouse to shoot at enemies. Some require a bit of speed and coordination, but the main obstacle when trying to kill them is figuring them out.

That's the “puzzle” part. On each screen, you must eliminate all enemies to advance. And while very few are pretty straightforward, most of them take a little study. You have to interact and discover how to defeat them. Those are pretty cool, I might add.

Now, about the “platformer” aspect. After some screens of fighting darkness, your character will lose it's ability to fly around, so the last part of each level is a platformer section, with puzzle elements, obviously. Still, don't worry. You keep your control scheme, so it's not like you have to learn to play them. It's still keyboard to move, and mouse to shoot.

And lastly, I have to call it “artistic” because the graphics play a big role in the experience. The ethereal quality of the design while you fly around shooting spheres of light to darkness entities makes it seem like a dream, or like the internal struggle of a person (which I find most likely to be the desired image).

Ok, so in conclusion: play this. It's novel, it's unique, and it does everything it does perfectly. It's really worth your time.

Enigmabot, Quick Thinking Puzzle Action

This one took me a while to figure out.

Let's get something out of the way first: This game is all mechanic. No jokes, plot, characters, or anything else. So, how well designed and executed is it's core mechanic then? Masterfully!

In Enigmabot, your enigmabot is a white cube that can move left, right, or teleport. This you'll be using a lot here, and thankfully the game is well paced, so the learning curve makes sense.

After the first few levels of training, the game will start demanding not only strategy to figure out the puzzle in the room, but also nimble fingers to perform precise teleportation. 

Enigmabot does pack quite a challenging punch, and figuring out the limits of your teleport ability is a big part of it. At first, some rules may seem arbitrary, at least, until you figure them out. So, highly recommended. Don't stand there, teleport to the link!

Think Outside the Box, or For It, Really

Last week we brought you Bonesaw, a fast paced action platformer. So today you have Think Outside the Box, a methodical puzzle game. Karmic balance and whatever, am I right?

Think Outside the Box is a pretty cool and original idea. In it's core, it's a “find the key object” “adventure game style” kind of deal. But, it's not that simple. Every level is a closed room with more than one way to escape (except the tutorial). Part of the fun is actually figuring out all of the possible escape routes.

This way, you can mess a plan up, burn some resources, and still win the level. Coupled with the lighthearted humor and pleasant graphics, the game is a rather nice experience.

And two more, clever details: the game is easy to finish, but is really difficult to “complete”. You have to be pretty creative to unlock all the endings and find all the charms. And second, the “charms”, are secret stars to find in the levels. Now, instead of being simple collectibles, charms can be traded for hints on how to get all the solutions. So, finally, an scavenger hunt with an actual reward!

Really cool, so don't miss it. See you next week!

Jed, Save All Robots

I'm actually thinking there should be an event with “Dual World” games on this site. I mean, I have reviewed quite a few of them already. So now, Jed joins the family.

In Jed, you play as Jed, a robot that must save a lot of kidnapped baby robots. You'll have your wits, your jump, and the ability to travel between two different level layouts to complete your task.

You can always see the other side on the back of the screen, and should use that information to time a few jumps.

The music is really good, it's a decent challenge (neither easy nor impossible) and if you'd like to play on “Hard Difficulty”, try getting all the unlockables. There is a top hat to use...

Pause Ahead, a.k.a. Time Out

From the Askiisoft team, the same group behind Tower of Heaven, we have Pause Ahead. With a plot similar to the previous game, you take control of a child-like character trapped in a temple with no memory and a cruel voice over as the only guide.

But don't think for a second that it's the same. In Pause Ahead, you have a pretty unique power: pausing the game. While paused, everything stops as normal, except for you. You can't control it, mind you, but your character keeps it's momentum. So, for example, if you pause while jumping, you keep going up until you resume the game. It's trickier that it sounds, but you'll get plenty of time to figure it out.

So, awesome music and gorgeous graphics compose a game built around a simple yet intricate and unique mechanic. What's not to love?

The Crooked Man, that lived in a Crooked House...

At the end of the review, there is the link to a translation of a game by Uri. I Assume that, if you are reading this blog, you come looking for games in English. In that previous link is the original, if you'd rather play that.

Now, today in Horror October, we have The Crooked Man. It's a Horror RPG game that puts you in the role of David, a new homeowner with a troubled past. As you play, his story is revealed while you fight to survive. I'd say more, but I don't want to spoil anything.

So, you might look at the screenshot above and say: “That's not going to be scary, it looks like a polished Final Fantsy Tactics”. Well, that's not exactly true. The Crooked Man uses al the classic horror movie moves: flickering lights, flashing screens and a great soundtrack to set the atmosphere. Add to all of this that you are actually “behind the wheel” controlling the character, and you'll find yourself in the zone pretty quickly. So, yes, this game is scary, don't take it lightly.

The story is fun and well written, and it's full of puzzles that are hard, but not impossible. My only complain is that some “challenges” take really long to complete. But don't despair, because it's worth it.

Good evening, and welcome. I am Doctor Blockhead, curator to the Museum of Curiosities; a home for the freakish, disturbing, and grotesque.

You may think you have found your way here by accident, though I assure you, it was not. You might think you were looking for something else, but I am certain you weren’t. A Mother’s Inferno

A Mother’s Inferno is a free, single-player game available for play through a download or web browser. It is possible to complete the game in about 30 minutes, making it perfect to play in the dark hours before bed.
 

In A Mother’s Inferno, a mother and her young son ride an empty train to an unknown destination. Without warning, the boy is ripped from her side by demonic forces, and she falls unconscious. After she wakes, she sets out to face the psychedelic inferno the train has become, her only defense a shard of glass, to save her son from the darkness.

A Mother’s Inferno is a truly unique game. A modern, horror-oriented interpretation of Dante’s Inferno, it distills the deepest fear of all parents: losing their child. This fear is palpable and constant, conveyed through the often frenetic first-person view, perverse and hallucinatory landscapes, and the mother’s persistent gasps for air as she claws her way through five train cars, each one more hellish than the next.
 

As the game progresses, the environments become less like train cars, and more like ancient cathedrals to the dark and unholy. At points, it’s easy to forget the terror unfolds within the belly of a moving train; however, the subtle, almost subconscious clatter of steel wheels on iron rails rings constantly beneath all things.
 

The mother’s journey is an exhausting tribulation, but she bears it with the ferocity of an animal with nothing to lose. It is easy to feel her struggle, to become her, to seek not her son, but yours. You will cross the River Styx on the back of a corpse; you will cut your own eyes out with broken glass; you will gut monstrous beasts like fish.

Your struggle will guide you through the five stages of grief, each train car representing a stage, until you arrive at the terminus of loss: acceptance.

Wind and Water, five elements, one heck of a puzzle

Wind and Water is a puzzle game, and a pretty original one at that. I'll explain the system a bit, but it's a lot better to see it on the screen and actually interact with it.

You'll move some pieces on the board, trying to connect at least four of them to make them dissapear and get your points. The movements are made in a clockwise or anti-clockwise fashion, and there are five different elements (with both a color AND a simbol) to combine. Think like Puzzle Bubble, but without the cannon.

Now, on the whole story department – what? I Haven't told you? Sorry. The game does feature a lot of RPG elements! It has a Story Mode, with a whole meta plot: You play as Amy, working on some errands (a.k.a: capturing the Elements, needed to make the whole game work), while the game designer duo of brothers build the game world around you.

It's a quirky and fun game, full of comedy, while being pretty darn difficult. So, don't let the cutesy sprites fool you, it's an actual puzzle challenge. Enjoy!

Today's game is Gum. In this black and white extravaganza you must use your amazing superpower of sticking to things to build a path for your character to exit the level. Use your brain and the walls to move and un-stick yourself from the building blocks.

I think this is the most straight forward puzzle I've review so far, and it's also one of them most difficult games on the site. So if you like a good and challenging retro style brain twister, check this one out!

The Karoshi series consists of puzzle platformer games. Your goal: Kill the main character, a.k.a. your character. You’ll be using spikes, guns, safe boxes and a lot of creative thinking.

Here you’ll find two different kinds of difficulties. Some levels require quick reflexes to make sure you die, while others seem impossible until you figure them out. Don’t give up, you’ll reach the end eventually.

Alex's Adventure, World Hopping Treasure Hunting

This is an exploration-platformer in the vein of Lyle in Cube Sector. As a matter of fact, it was recommended to me after that review. So if you enjoyed Lyle's quest, make sure to check Alex's.

Alex's Adventure takes place in two separate worlds that you can finish in any order. The obstacles come in two varieties: the usual platformer hazards of enemies and pits (some are tough) and multi-screen puzzles. As you go through the game, you'll constantly see glimpses of screens you can quite get to, or objects just outside of you reach. One of the most developed aspects of Alex's Adventure are this “whole picture” puzzles, in which you have to keep an image of the level as a whole to solve.

The goal of the game is to find all the statues, and each world has half of them. Even if sometimes it's rough on the edges, this one is an awesome game. Enjoy!

Alien Cortex, Deep Space Platformer

Today’s game is a simple platformer. Why do I bring it up? Because it works. It’s short, yes, but it’s fun and it shows how much you can get out of an idea.

Alien Cortex puts us in the role of an alien stumbling upon ancient ruins. Much to his surprise, it turns out the engravings on the walls are from his own people.

In order to escape, we will have to guide him through a series of tests.

Each corridor is themed and after solving the puzzles and defeating the traps, our little hero’s journey will end.

Even though everyone should play this game, I think aspiring game designers are the ones that stand to get the most out of it. Both the little details, from the ancient language on the background to the names of the test, and the inventiveness of the obstacles are what made Alien Cortex stand out from the rest of the games I’ve been playing lately. So give it a try!

DuoTasking, a Robot and its Plasma Cannon

Today entry is a really fun puzzle platformer. In it, you play as both a robot (doing the normal platformer stuff) and a cannon at the side of the screen. The twist is that BOTH characters move at the same time and with the same buttons.

The difficulty comes from avoiding hazards with both characters, while trying to collect all the coins on the screen with the robot. Now, to destroy most of the obstacles in your way, you’ll be constantly using the cannon.

It’s a pretty original idea, and the game actually takes good advantage of it. There are very few “weird” levels, most are rather straightforward. Now, even though there’s still a lot of potential in this idea, DuoTasking makes a compelling game that I recommend wholeheartedly.

Shift, a Black and White series of deadly traps

Last week we were visiting Invert Inc., a company (that at least seems to be) genuinely beneficial to society. No so much this week’s entry. TC Sciences is pretty controversial, especially with regards to how they treat their test subjects.

Welcome to Shift! You are test subject 32763!

Shift is a puzzle platformer with a signature mechanic. Along the way, you’ll have to “shift” past obstacles, inverting both the color scheme and the world.

The game atmosphere draws heavily from Portal, but that’s not all it has. Even when you get your head around the shifting mechanic, the game keeps you on your toes by throwing a few lateral thinking puzzles into the mix. All in all, it can be tough, but never impossible.

On a final note, even though the last games improve a lot over the previous ones, it’s still highly recommended to play through all of them. Each new instance adds new mechanics that become part of the Shift world in all subsequent games. So, to get the full experience, go from 1 to 4.

Invert Inc., Enough Invert Energy for Everyone!

Invert Inc. has a similar gimmick to Backworld: You alternate between a black world and a white world by touching Ctrl. Unlike Backworld, though, Invert Inc. is more fast-paced, and some levels border on the frenetic.

If I had to say which was the simplest game I've review so far, I'm pretty sure I would say this one. Using the Level Editor, you'll realize that Invert Inc. uses very very few elements to construct each level. Nevertheless, it goes on and shows all you can do with them. It turns out to be quiet a lot.

 Here you have the two different realities, side by side.

There is a warning I must give before the download link: Invert Inc. DOESN'T save your progress. It's not a long game, so don't worry. But you have to complete it in one sitting because as soon as you close it, you have to start from scratch again.

So, go forth and make us proud! Invert Inc. awaits you!

Noitu Love and the Army of Grinning Darns, Super Sentai Action!

Today we have fast action, great music and wacky graphics. Noitu Love is one of the best action platformers I’ve seen in a long time. But why is that? What makes it so good?

I can tell you what I loved about it: The Bosses. The bosses Noitu has to kill to eventually fight professor Darnacus Damnation are, simply put, awesome.

They are fun, they are colorful, and fighting them is half puzzle, half action sequence.

You have to figure them out before you can damage them, and even then actually killing a boss takes its fair share of reflexes and coordination.

Also, the game takes full advantage of all of its features. As I always say, it’s nice to see a game that can both implement simple and fun features while using them to their fullest.

On a final note, this would be an impressive setting for running Danger Patrol. Just saying.

Fair Warning: The game saves your progress after every level. When you replay a previous level, you start with the lives you had last time you got to it. This will be useful if you find yourself in the final levels with only one or two lives left. Just replay the last level you’ve cleared (where you had a decent amount of lives) and work your way through. Hopefully, now you can save a few of them.

Lyle in Cube Sector, Mayhem³!

Even though this was one of the original games that inspired DazzlingMarch, it had to be cut from the schedule.  Why? Because it gets pretty darn hard to win, that’s why! So I couldn't finish it on time to post a review.

This game puts you in the pixelated pants of Lyle, a man with a mission: Rescuing his kitty. To get his pet back, you’ll have to travel through a retro-style world using only cubes and your cube-related abilities. The game graphics are simply beautiful (if you are into the 80’s style) and the non-linear, metroidvania map design provides discovery as you traverse the intricate passages.

Now, when I said Lyle’s a though game, I don’t mean to say “don’t play it”. Quite the opposite. You see, I love a well designed masterpiece that, with very few elements, can create a demanding and exiting gameplay.

Lyle in Cube Sector delivers. I think that’s all I need to add here.
