Lyle in Cube Sector, Mayhem Cubed!

Review #36 – Free Video Game

Lyle in Cube Sector, Mayhem3!

Even though this was one of the original games that inspired DazzlingMarch, it had to be cut from the schedule.  Why? Because it gets pretty darn hard to win, that’s why! So I couldn't finish it on time to post a review.

This game puts you in the pixelated pants of Lyle, a man with a mission: Rescuing his kitty. To get his pet back, you’ll have to travel through a retro-style world using only cubes and your cube-related abilities. The game graphics are simply beautiful (if you are into the 80’s style) and the non-linear, metroidvania map design provides discovery as you traverse the intricate passages.

Now, when I said Lyle’s a though game, I don’t mean to say “don’t play it”. Quite the opposite. You see, I love a well designed masterpiece that, with very few elements, can create a demanding and exiting gameplay.

Lyle in Cube Sector delivers. I think that’s all I need to add here.

  1. This game looks great!

I'll be trying it out today. It looks stylistically similar to a game I'm working on (whose goal is to escape a slummy city in the Midwestern US), so it may help me with some of the elements I'm currently stuck over.

    1. Well, I don't know if you were going for something so "surreal" as Lyle, but it mostly takes place in big structures, so it might inspire you there.

Didn't know you worked on video games, too. Although, now that I think of it,the pixel art should have given me and idea :)

  2. Yes, the surreal-scapes of Lyle are definitely an inspiration. My game is equally dream-like (though slightly more realistic, if that makes sense), as living in the Midwest US is kind of like an illogical, nightmarish dream that one recalls in a foggy, sleep-deprived state. Haha

My foray into the world of video games has been relatively recent. I originally started programming text-based adventures, and moved into graphics about a year ago. Since then, I've been dividing my limited time (and attention) between a few different game projects and RPGs.

Maybe someday, with enough time and discipline on my end, I'll have a game for you to play and review! ;)

    1. That would be fun!

I'm not sure if this is what you had in mind, but there's a book called Neverwhere. The story happens in a dream-like city, and almost everything seems like a weird reflection of the "real world". If you (or anyone reading) can, check it out. It's pretty good.
